Slack Integration

Connect Slack to Revelry Ai to search messages, channels, files, and members, read and send messages, and work with canvases — directly from chat using MCP tools.

Setting up Slack happens in two phases:

  1. An organization admin creates a Slack app and enters its credentials in Revelry Ai (one-time, org-wide).
  2. Each individual user then connects their own Slack account via OAuth.

Capabilities

Once connected, the Slack MCP server gives the AI these tools (see Slack's Guide to the Slack MCP server):

  • Search — messages, files, members, and channels across the workspace.
  • Messaging — read channel history and send messages.
  • Canvases — create and read Slack canvases.
  • Member access — read profile information such as custom fields and statuses.

Each user acts as themselves, so the AI can only see and do what that user's Slack permissions allow.

Phase 1 — Admin: Create and Configure the Slack App

An organization admin completes this once. You'll need the Manage Integrations permission in Revelry Ai and the ability to create apps in your Slack workspace.

Step 1: Create a Slack App

  1. Go to api.slack.com/apps
  2. Click Create New App
  3. Choose From scratch
  4. Give the app a name (e.g., "Revelry Ai")
  5. Select your workspace
  6. Click Create App

Step 2: Enable MCP

  1. In your new app's settings, click Agents & AI Apps in the left sidebar
  2. Toggle Slack Model Context Protocol Server to On

Step 3: Configure the OAuth Redirect URL

  1. In the left sidebar, click OAuth & Permissions
  2. Under Redirect URLs, click Add New Redirect URL
  3. Enter your Revelry Ai instance's callback URL:
    https://<your-instance-domain>/credentials/oauth2/callback/slack
Replace <your-instance-domain> with your platform's domain (e.g., app.revelry.ai). Your Revelry Ai team can confirm the exact URL if needed.
  4. Click Add, then Save URLs

Step 4: Add User Token Scopes

Still on the OAuth & Permissions page, scroll down to User Token Scopes and add the following scopes:

CategoryScopes to add
Searchsearch:read.public, search:read.private, search:read.mpim, search:read.im, search:read.files, search:read.users
Messagingchat:write
Historychannels:history, groups:history, mpim:history, im:history
Canvasescanvases:read, canvases:write
Usersusers:read, users:read.email

These are the recommended scopes for full functionality. You can add more scopes later if needed — see Slack's scope documentation for the full list.

Step 5: Copy Credentials into Revelry Ai

  1. In your Slack app settings, click Basic Information in the left sidebar
  2. Under App Credentials, copy the Client ID and Client Secret

Save these somewhere secure — the Client Secret cannot be retrieved again after you leave this page.

  3. In Revelry Ai, go to Settings → Organization → Integrations (the Shared tab)
  4. Find Slack and click Connect
  5. Paste the Client ID and Client Secret
  6. Click Connect

You'll be redirected to Slack to authorize the app. Once complete, Slack is available for users in your organization to connect.

The app credentials are stored at the organization level. Individual users never see them — they only authorize their own account against your app.

Troubleshooting

ProblemSolution
OAuth redirects to a broken Slack page or loopsVerify the redirect URL in your Slack app settings matches your Revelry Ai instance exactly (see Step 3).
"Failed to connect" or tools don't work in chat despite showing "Connected"Confirm MCP is enabled under Agents & AI Apps in your Slack app settings (Step 2). If you changed scopes after the initial install, reinstall the app from OAuth & Permissions.

Phase 2 — User: Connect Your Slack Account

Once an admin has completed Phase 1, each user connects their own account:

  1. Open the Chat Tools menu (the + button next to the message input) and select Integrations, or go to the Integrations page under My Organization in your account menu.
  2. On the Personal tab, find Slack and click Connect.
  3. You'll be redirected to Slack's OAuth authorization page.
  4. Authorize the requested permissions.
  5. You'll be redirected back to Revelry Ai with Slack enabled for your chats.

Using Slack in Chat

With Slack enabled, you can ask the AI to work with your workspace:

  • "Summarize the discussion in #product-launch from this week."
  • "Find the message where we agreed on the release date."
  • "Draft a canvas with the action items from this thread."
  • "Post this summary to #team-updates."

The AI calls the appropriate Slack MCP tools and brings the results into the conversation. Actions that write to Slack (such as sending a message) go through the approval gate before they run.

Managing the Connection

  • Users can disconnect their personal Slack connection from the Integrations page at any time.
  • Admins manage the app credentials from the organization integrations page; removing them disables Slack for the whole organization.

Availability

The Slack integration is behind a feature flag and requires an admin to create a Slack app before users can connect. If you don't see Slack, contact your organization admin or Revelry Ai support.
